Funded generously by the CE&S Foundation, the Teen Talks project aims to address the gaps in accessible models for effective, authentic trauma-informed youth engagement. We’ve been thrilled to collaborate with the Backside Learning Center (BLC) and other out-of-school time partners to help implement the Teen Talks model created by youth for youth within the Sowing Seeds with Faith organization.
Bounce is proud to work alongside organizations like BLC as we continue to prioritize meaningful, trauma-informed engagement that meets youth where they are and helps them thrive.

Who is the Backside Learning Center?
The Backside Learning Center (BLC) is an independent non-profit organization providing support and resources in a safe, welcoming environment for the diverse community of racetrack workers and their families at Churchill Downs and surrounding racetracks.
What type of Services do you all provide?
The BLC provides direct, essential on-site support to the 1,000+ racetrack employees, including walk-in-services or more intensive case management. For families of racetrack workers, we provide early childhood programming for children aged 0-5, an after-school program for grades K-12, special programs for teens, English classes for adults, and more.
What does it mean to be part of this project?
We love being a part of this project! We had been wanting to increase youth voice within our programming, so when we were given the opportunity to pilot Teen Talks, we were so excited!
What has it been like piloting the Teen Talks program?
Piloting the Teen Talks program has been a rewarding experience. We truly believe that if we provide a safe space for youth to lead conversations on topics they select, then they will foster meaningful connections, build resilience, and develop leadership skills.
What do the youth think about the Teen Talks program?
The youth facilitators and participants are enjoying being a part of Teen Talks. They have mentioned that their favorite parts are meeting new people, eating together, and talking. Our attendance is growing because youth want to be a part of this special program.
Have you learned anything new from this experience thus far?
The most challenging part of this project has been moving out of the way to let the youth lead. However, we have learned not to doubt the youth’s abilities; they are rising to the occasion, and we feel so proud. Throughout this process, we have also learned about youth needs and interests as well as how to coach youth to help them reach their full potential.
Anything else you would like to share?
We appreciate all the support Bounce has given us with this project and the opportunity to learn and grow with other organizations also participating in this project.
